Troop presents Scout ranks, stages for campout

Troop 50 not only readied for its upcoming campout at Tannehill State Park and Camp Jack Wright, but it closed its meeting by honoring three of its four newest Scouts who crossed over from Webelos in April with their Scout ranks.

Michael, Louis and Mark received the Scout rank -- the first rank on the trail to Eagle -- at the close of the meeting, surrounded by their fellow Scouts and parents. Requirements for the rank include repeating the Pledge of Allegiance; demonstrating the Scout sign, salute, and handshake; demonstrate tying the square knot, and understanding and agreeing to live by the Scout Oath or Promise, Scout Law, motto, and slogan, and the Outdoor Code.

The meeting started with the troop staging for the upcoming campout, which gave our newest Scouts the opportunity to check out the troop's gear and to become familiar with pitching the troop's tents, setting up a dining fly, navigating the contents of a patrol chuckbox, and other using other items in conjunction with outdoor camping and cooking. Much of this knowledge and experience will go toward their efforts to earn the next Scouting rank, which is the Tenderfoot rank.

The campout will also include hiking, orienteering and geocaching, which will also aid our new Scouts' advancement efforts. The troop will also have a chance to explore the Tannehill State Park historic ironworks as well as participate in a reptile study program.
